College Football Saturday
Huge day on tap. We will be on and off. First, looks like Ricky Jean-Francois is the one who is injured and won’t be doing the injuring to Tim Tebow when LSU plays Florida. The defensive lineman is out of the SEC clash with an injured groin. Karma is a ….
Texas comes from behind and staggers Oklahoma, 45-35. The Sooners played better when they were fast-paced. Every time they slowed a bit, it was advantage Longhorns. Sam Bradford impressed; Colt McCoy dazzled. I mean the improvement by the Longhorn QB is amazing. He runs and passes and leads. Texas never flinched when Oklahoma got up and just ground down the Sooners. And let’s remember the refs also made a few awful calls that thankfully didnt affect the game.
How about the biggest embarrassment in all of college football. Syracuse, no? Rutgers, no? We will get to those schools. What about the laughingstock that is Rich Rodriguez and Michigan. Losing in the Little House to Toledo. This was a 1-4 Toledo team. Did someone tell the Wolverines they were facing a team from Ohio and they thought it was Ohio State? What a colossal joke. Toledo’s Nick Moore caught 20 passes. Twenty! Hopefully, Lloyd Carr has a grin on his face. The Wolverines missed a 26-yard field goal that could have forced overtime. If not for the miracle win against Wisconsin — that is what it has come down to miracle wins at home — they would be 1-5, instead, they are 2-4. Just like the Rockets. Michigan was 24-0 against MAC schools. WAS! Can’t wait to hear how UMiliation will be great in two years when Coach Rod has his players. Michigan is the Nebraska of the Big Ten….it ain’t what it used to be. Know some folks who unfortunately work for people who went to UMiliation. Was great to hear how they would brood, stew and fume for hours after each loss just making life miserable for others. We’ve got two words for you Michigan: You Suck!
Also, in another Big Ten surprise: one team is 3-3 and the other is 6-1. One team is Illinois and the other is Minnesoata. The one-win Gophers from last season are now bowl-eligible after going to Champaign and popping the Illini. Kudos to Tim Brewster.
Back to the Least of the Big East, the Gregs. Congratulations to Schiano and Robinson on another lost weekend. One falls to Cincinnati and the other to West Virginia. Robinson’s stock has no value. And Schiano is Wall Street. Wow, 11-12 since the perfect start a couple years back. Good Knight!
By the way, those who wanted Skip Holtz to be the next coach at Notre Dame after East Carolina’s fast start appear to have jumped the gun. The Pirates were jabbed by Houston and today they are vanquished by Virginia. Your 15 minutes are up. ECU is 3-3 and going nowhere. Al Groh somehow has gotten the Cavaliers back in gear. Nice job there.
Texas Tech survives — and we mean survives — Nebraska. The Cornhuskers used a Parcells-like ball-control attack and that kept Graham Harrell & Co. in check. Mike Leach showed a ton of stones going for it on fourth-and-four from his own territory. Guess you can do that when you have Michael Crabtree. Still, the Red Raiders had an extra point go through after hitting the goalpost. And the one in OT was blocked and missed. A bad Joe Ganz pass turned into a game-ending INT. These efforts — especially at home — make us wonder how TT will do against the Oklahomas, Texases and Missouris if and when the hook up with them.
So much for the scholar schools being undefeated. Vandy fell into a huge trap game at Mississippi State with Georgia up next and Sylvester Croom’s Bulldogs pulled the upset. Then, Northwestern was slammed and jammed early by Michigan State and that ended that run. And if anyone wants to throw Notre Dame into that mix — do they really want to be considered with the Wildcats and Commodores? — the Irish followed the pattern of two wins and a loss, falling to UNC. Butch Davis has done wonders in Chapel Hill. Nice comeback for the Heels in a big game. Look for the Irish to possibly follow the two-wins-and-a-loss pattern this season.
Penn State continues to pummel. The Nittany Lions destroyed Wisconsin in Madison. Joe Paterno has things in high gear. The clash with Ohio State is huge.
And what about Florida thrashing LSU? So much for Ricky Jean-Francois and his mouth about hurting Tim Tebow. The Gators put a 51-21 stomp on the Tigers in the Swamp. Looks like Florida and LSU are back in the BCS picture in a big way.
Started at the top with the Big 12 and will hit back there now. How about Mike Gundy and his men at Oklahoma State. They took down Chase Daniel and Missouri. So much for Texas playing back-to-back No. 1s. And how about Oklahoma having a loss and the Cowboys and Tulsa being undefeated. Topsy-turvy college football world we love.
Leave it to Joe Paterno to succinctly sum up the state of college football: “You see games like Oklahoma and Texas and I thought Oklahoma was going to kill them.," the Penn State legend said. " I saw the first quarter, and I was shocked when I heard Texas beat them. So you never know. Too many big teams are equal. It seems now with the talent anybody can just about beat anybody on a certain day.”
