Super scoop of NFL Sunday
The games had so much action and wild finishes it seemed like a college Saturday. Here we go:
After almost Folking himself and the Cardinals, Ken Whisenhunt thrived in OT. In a wild, scattered final four seconds, an injured Cardinal player created an offside and turned what would have been a 57-yard field-goal attempt into a 52-yarder. Wade Phillips had the offense on the field and looked like he was going to pass on the 57-yarder. However, after the penalty he sent out Nick Folk. Kick blocked, Cardinals win. Not so fast. Cardinal coach Whisenhunt opted for the timeout trick. Given a second shot, Folk drilled it and then Arizona faithful. However, on this day, Kurt Warner’s prayers were answered as Sean Morey blocked a Mat McBriar punt and Monty Beisel took it into the end zone for a 30-24 Arizona victory. Whisenhunt was high-fiving fans as he left the field.
The Cardinals used to play in St. Louis, so let’s check in on the team that currently resides in the Show-Me State. The Rams shocked the Cardinals and the football world, clocking the Washington Redskins. Despite doing everything imaginable to lose Jim Haslett’s debut, the Rams somehow gave Josh Brown a shot at a 49-yard field goal and he drilled it for a 19-17 victory. On a weekend when Missouri fell from the unbeaten, St. Louis left the winless ranks. Not sure which is more shocking.
Speaking of teams with new coaches, Tom Cable was welcomed to the NFL by a vintage Silver-and-Black performance. Only problem is that it was this vintage of Oakland Raider football, which is a sour grape. Drew Brees dissected Oakland to the tune of 26-of-30 for 320 yards in a 34-3 rout. JaMarcus Russell came home to play in front of the New Orleans crowd — he went to LSU — and was a disaster, going 13-of-35 for 159 yards with a fumble and interception. Lane Kiffin, Mr. Davis is on the white courtesy phone. The positive Al Davis can take out of this is the Raiders led 3-0 after one. The rest of the game, forget it.
Who needs Michael Vick when you have Matt Ryan and Michael Turner? The Falcons are 4-2 in one of the most amazing turnarounds in recent history. The Bears looked like they had a 20-19 win after Kyle Orton hit Rashied Davis with a TD pass with 11 seconds to play. However, an awful squib kick, a pass from Ryan to Michael Jenkins and a 48-yard field goal by Jason Elam had the Falcons flying, 22-20.
Matt Schaub and the Houston Texans have a "W" after taking a thriller from the Miami Dolphins. Schaub scored on a quarterback draw from three yards with three seconds left to give Houston a 29-28 victory. Patrick Cobbs, who played at North Texas, had a huge game for Miami, and Ricky Williams scored his first TD since 2005. It wasn’t enough, however.
The Tampa Bay Bucs used the SEC home-field advantage to smother the Carolina Panthers. Jeff Garcia came back and played a strong game. Jake Delhomme was picked three times.
Barely worth mentioning is the Jets and Brett Favre keeping the Bengals and Ryan Fitzpatrick winless. What else did you expect? Wonder if Fireman Ed would go on IR if he fell off the other guy’s shoulders. Talk about played out.
Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison got it together and rocked the Ravens, 31-3. Have to wonder whether the close losses the Ravens just absorbed didnt take their toll here.
The Detroit Lions were apparently jobbed on a pass interference call that led to the Minnesota Vikings keeping them winless on a last-second field goal. Hey, we told you the only win the Lions were going to get was the Charles Rogers judgment. How greedy can they be? And how about Dan Orlovsky showing that he went to UConn and not Yale by dropping back and rolling out of the back of the end zone to give Minnesota a safety. The final score was 12-10. A safety is worth how many points, Dan? Two!
The Jacksonville Jaguars have faced all sorts of adversity this season yet they are 3-3 after beating the Broncos in Denver. The Jags took advantage of three turnovers to post a 24-17 victory. Team has a lot of spine. Easily could have packed it in with all the woes that had hit it earlier this season.
The past Holmgrens downed the current Holmgrens as Aaron Rodgers and the Packers improved to 3-3 in Seattle. Rodgers threw for two and ran for one. The current Holmgrens were reduced to starting No. 3 QB Charlie Frye, who had a Charlie Frye-like 12-of-23 effort for 83 yards, two TDs and two picks.
The San Francisco 49ers seem to be ready to turn the corner, and then they let the Philadelphia Eagles score 23 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Donovan McNabb threw for 280 yards despite missing his two top receivers and all-everything RB Brian Westbrook. Bet you the Niners wish they had a mulligan on that Alex Smith pick.
The San Diego Chargers rounded out Sunday with a 30-10 throttling of the New England Patriots. Chargers got big lift from Philip Rivers with 3 TD passes. Have to wonder what Bill Belichick will do with Matt Cassel. Getting late to make a move or bring someone into New England. Wonder whether anyone also watched pregame show with Dallas-Arizona’s fantastic finish going write into OT show, which blows the competion away.
