WNBA Shock signs Lieberman, 50
After the WNBA version of Malice at The PalaceI the other night, the Detroit Shock has decided to stock its roster by going to one of the pioneers of women’s basketball. That’s right, after a fight got the WNBA more publicity than its entire season and playoffs will, it has gone the route of a circus stunt: 50-year-old Nancy Lieberman, mostly seen on ESPN nowadays, has signed a seven-day contract and will become the oldest player to play in the league."Can she still compete at this level? I don’t know,"Shock coach Bill Laimbeer said. "But I’m going to throw her in the fire." Just to give you an idea of when Lieberman was in her prime, she was a member of the 1976 U.S. Olympic team.
Have to wonder if Isiah Thomas will be calling Joe Dumars to see if he can get a 10-day contract with the Pistons since he is only 47. This has to do wonders for all the young talent hoping to catch on in the league. What’s next, a female basketball version of Eddie Gaedel? You’ll have to let us know how she does because unless there is another riot, our WNBA season is over. What an embarrasment.
