The Heisman Chase is on!

Missouri’s Chase Daniel moves to the front of the pack. He is an ungodly 75-of-88 in his last three games and completed 20 in a row against Buffalo. Take that, Sam Bradford of Oklahoma. You pay the price for having a bye week and slip behind the Mizzou QB. And the Sooner slinger had best watch out because TCU can create problems for OU this week. Have to figure that a Big 12 QB is about 2-5 to win the Heisman in 2008. Javon Ringer just carries the ball and carries the ball and carries the ball to the tune of 82 times in two weeks. Know Michigan State usually stubs its toe as the seasons change to autumn, but for now he has earned accolades and a spot on the Heisman dais.

Tim Tebow, the incumbent, doesn’t  have the stats that earned him the hardware last year, but he has wins. And we all know Heisman voters love those (see Eric Crouch). Mark Sanchez, the frontrunner out west, has a rare Thursday night appearance as USC faces Oregon State. Can’t hurt to have the stage to yourself, can it? The Texas Tech tandem or Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree are done with the soft spots in the schedule. The Red Raiders need big wins in big games for either to have a shot.

Knowshon Moreno is one fun watch. An acrobat at halfback. Whether hurdling or leaping, the Georgia RB is a human highlight reel on the football field as Dominique Wilkins was years back for the Bulldogs and Atlanta Hawks on the basketball court.

Max Hall plans on being a Heisman-buster as he leads BYU toward being a BCS-buster. That would be 103-0 for the Cougars over the past two weeks. Hall, by the way, is a transfer from Arizona State. And let’s not forget Jeremy Maclin, the triple threat at Mizzou. He may be the best and most exciting player in the country and his reach could extend out of Daniel’s shadow. He just won’t be able to get the Heisman voters to see that far.

Honorable mention: For the show they put on last Friday night, Baylor’s Robert Griffin and UConn’s Donald Brown. And we haven’t forgotten Colt McCoy of Texas.
