NFL quick picks & kicks
The have-nots have less this weekend as the Cincinnati Bengalswill be without Carson Palmer against the New York Jets and the struggling Philadelphia Eagles will be missing Brian Westbrook against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
The Arizona Cardinals’ Adrian Wilson will be without $25,000 for his hit on Trent Edwards of the Buffalo Bills last week and three Miami Dolphins will be missing $10,000 apiece for their "Cupid Shuffe" against the San Diego Chargers.
On top the picks:
Ryan Fitzpatrick vs. Brett Favre. Is there a mercy rule? What kind of spot will the Bengals’ and Chiefs’ ownerships be in when Marvin Lewis and Herm Edwards eventually are told goodbye. Who will be next on their coaching lists? Interesting to monitor this if/when it happens.
Will it be double trouble — not for Kellen Winslow — for Woe-hio when the Giants face the Browns on Monday Night or can Romeo Crennel & Co. pull a shocker. We don’t think Cleveland can win, but wouldn’t be surprised if it stuck around for a while. Still, a double knockout by the New York teams of Ohio is likely.
The Philadelphia Eagles sans Westbrook faces a 49er team that is making progress. Donovan McNabb is "embarrassed." No need to be red-faced anymore when you lose to the Niners and we think the Eagles will do just that.
The resurgent Miami Dolphins head to Houston. The Texans are coming off one of the worst losses in franchise history. Sage Rosenfels handed the game to the Indy Colts last week. Know the Dolphins are on the uptick, but Houston can’t lose them all. Like to think the Texans can find a way into the win column here.
The Chicago Bears head to Atlanta for a meeting with Matt Ryan and the Falcs. Talk about resurgent, how about those birds? We like to think they can keep it going in a close one with the Monsters of the Midway.
The St. Louis Rams will be roasted by the Washington Redskins. Why bother analyzing a rout?
The Dallas Cowboys travel to Arizona. If Kurt Warner is playing and not praying or thinking about retirement, we like the Cardinals’ chances. Arizona is a different team at home and can stick with the best of them. The road is a different team and a different story.
The Oakland Raiders travel to New Orleans. The initial vibe is that the Saints will be smarting after Monday night’s loss. However, the Raiders have shown the tenacity to stick around. This is a homecoming for JaMarcus Russell, so we can expect a good game from the No. 1 overall out of LSU. Figure the script to be the same: New Orleans wins, but Oakland stays close.
Carolina is at Tampa Bay. These are becoming like SEC games on Saturday. Rough, tough and close. Like the Bucs and Jeff Garcia to find a way at home.
The Detroit Lions are at the Minnesota Vikings. The Lions have their one win for the season — the Charles Rogers $8.5 million judgment — so let’s go with the Vikings.
The Indianapolis Colts face the Baltimore Ravens. The Colts are lucky to be where they are and the Ravens are unlucky to be where they are record-wise. Will the Colts’ slippage continue? Will Joe Flacco continue to grow. Just have a feeling that the Colts turn it up, turn it up, turn it up here.
The Broncos face the Jaguars in the Mile High City. Know the homefield goes to the Broncos, but the Jags have been tenacious. Wouldn’t be shocked to see them win, but think it will be close.
Mike Holmgren past meets Mike Holmgren present as the Green Bay Packers head to Seattle. Boy, if the past can’t beat the present the natives at Lambeau Field are going to start to get restless over Aaron Rodgers. Let the discomfort begin.
And in the Sunday nighter, Matt Cassellheads back to a pretty little place in Southern California, down San Diego way as the New England Patriots meet the Chargers. SD hasn’t shown the killer instinct. If there ever were a time to do it, then it would be on the national stage. This could be the last chance for San Diego to show it is a true contender and not fading to pretender.
