The Heisman Chase

Usually called the Heisman Watch, we will change the title this season since Missouri’s Chase Daniel figures to be a major player. Hence, it is now the Heisman Chase.

Daniel has been nothing short of remarkable the past two weeks. In his last 13 drives the Missouri QB has produced 12 TDs and one FG. We have him a nose behind Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford. The Sooners’ sophomore has been brilliant, too. He lanced Washington on Saturday to the tune of 304 yards, five passing TDs and one rushing TD. Too bad the Sooners and Mizzou don’t play in the regular season. A meeting in the Big 12 title game could be all-in for the Heisman if both schools run the table.

Incumbent Tim Tebow had the week off but he gets back to business in a big way as Florida faces Tennessee in an annual SEC battle. Tebow will have to step up his numbers to compete with his Big 12 QB brothers. Meanwhile, out on the West Coast, Mark Sanchez made his pitch for Heisman consideration, throwing four TD passes and leading a destruction of Ohio State. We’ll remove James Laurinaitis and Beanie Wells from our Heisman Chase for now. And probably for the rest of the season.

Graham Harrell will not be in the front pack. He puts up  the usual Texas Tech numbers. However, until Harrell and the Red Raiders show they can win a big one it will be tough to consider him a candidate for the stiff-arm honor. On the other hand, Michael Crabtree is deserving of huge recognition. The sophomore wideout is coming off his sixth three-TD game and would be the real thing in any offense, not Mike Leach’s airline.

Also at QB in the Big 12 is Colt McCoy, who had an unplanned bye week as Texas’ game with Arkansas was postponed until Sept. 27 due to Hurricane Ike.

Missouri’s Jeremy Maclin is another wideout worth keeping an eye on this season. He probably can’t win because of Daniel’s shadow, but this is a special player. Dangers as a return man as well as a receiver. Ask Nevada, which was torched by Maclin quickly on an 80-yard play.

BYU’s Max Hall can be a Heisman buster as well as helping the Cougars bust the BCS. For those of you didn’t see the seven-TD performance in BYU’s 59-0 blistering of UCLA, Hall is for real and so are the Cougars. The BYU-Utah game this season has a chance to be special.

We will give special mention to another QB, Drew Willy of Buffalo. His Flutie-like play at the end of the Temple game was tremendous, no matter who the opponent was. Willy had 348 in the contest. Turner Gill and Willy have turned the Buffalo program around in a hurry. Don’t be shocked to see Gill in Syracuse next season.

Knowshon Moreno’s stock takes a bit of a hit despite scoring the game-winning touchdown against South Carolina. A 79-yard effort won’t win you many votes; a hurdle will. By the way, has anyone noticed that the second-leading rusher in the country at 188 ypg is Donald Brown of UConn. Just a nod to a great start.
