College Football Saturday
Well, Michigan State founds its way to win against Iowa when Javon Ringer was under control, only netting 91 yards on 25 carries. Meanwhile Northwestern is 5-0. Anyone want to raise their hands and fess up to saying they thought an October 11 battle between Northwestern and MSU would feature teams with a combined one loss? Penn State is also 6-0 as Evan Royster roasted Purdue. Junie Williams accounts for 431 total yards as Illinois annihilates Michigan. How horid is the Wisconsin loss last week? How bad would the Wolverines have looked without that comeback in Year One of Rich Rodriguez?
Sam (I Am The Heisman Frontrunner) Bradford and Oklahoma took care of business against Baylor. That would be Sooners 18, Bears 0 in the overall series. Still, Baylor frosh QB and track star Robert Griffin is a stud and bears watching. Bradford goes 23-of-31 for 372 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT (tipped ball). Your move, Chase Daniel tonight against Nebraska. Kansas fell behind 20-0 against Iowa State before Tood Reesing got the Jayhawks in gear. The Big 12 QB Corps is nothing short of stunning in 2008.
Things aren’t quite looking up for Bobby Petrino at Arkansas, are they? Another thrashing, this one from Florida. And speaking of stock down, mentioned Iowa above but Kirk Ferentz isn’t exactly a white-hot commodity anymore, is he? Add Greg Schiano to the list of people whose shares are tumbling faster than Wall Street. The Scarlet Knights are 1-4 after losing to West Virginia.
Duke failed its midterm against Georgia Tech, 27-0. It will be interesting to see where these scholars schools finish after their fast starts.
Notre Dame edges Stanford. However, the Irish fumble the ball with less than 10 seconds to go on a fourth down, giving the Cardinal one last chance. We like what Clausen, Tate and Floyd have going. We don’t like the shill job Pat Haden throws in on NBC. Tom Hammond mentions relationship between QB coach Ron Powlus and the Golden Boy. And says Powlus was a QB at ND. Haden throws in, "Pretty good one." Last week looked, Powlus was likely the ultimate symbol in disappointment and underachieving in South Bend. Beano Cook said he was going to win two Heismans. He probably didn’t ever get two Heisman votes. Talk about a joke.
Wonder if the USC Marching Band will dedicate "That’s Life" to O.J. Simpson at some point tonight before the Oregon game or at halftime.
Graham Harrell comes up enormous against Kansas State — 38-of-51, 454 yards, 6 TDs and one rushing TD. Harrell is the school’s all-time passing leader at 12,709 yards, erasing the record of 12,429 yards by Kliff Kingsbury from 1999-02. Michael Crabtree had nine catches for 107 yards and two TDs. That would be 30 TD passes already for the superb soph wideout.
Vanderbilt is rocking. The Commordores are 5-0 after jarring Auburn. The last time they beat the Tigers was the 1955 Gator Bowl. Vandy goes to Mississippi State next week. If they can handle the Bullodgs, they would be undefeated when another meeting with a different set of ‘Dawgs comes up the following week in Athens, Ga.
Missouri equaled misery for Nebraska as Chase Daniel continued his Heisman dance with Sam Bradford. And USC came out punching in the second quarter and drilled Oregon over and over. Take that, Ducks for that the Oregon State Beavers did to the Trojans last week. Mark Sanchez and USC rolled it up. Doesn’t pay to be playing SC after a loss. They are 9-0 since 2001 in those games. Pete Carroll has not lost back-to-back games since 2001.
