CLEVELAND, October 30, 2008 (AP) -- LeBron James scored 22 points, Daniel Gibson had 20 of his 25 in the first half and the Cleveland Cavaliers won their home opener 96-79 over Charlotte on Thursday night, spoiling well-traveled coach Larry Brown's debut with the Bobcats. James just missed a triple-double, adding nine rebounds and nine assists in only 30 minutes for the Cavs, who bounced back from a sloppy season-opening loss at Boston with a much crisper performance. Mo Williams finished with 17 points. Jason Richardson scored 24 and Gerald Wallace 13 for the Bobcats. Gibson made three 3-pointers and eight of 10 shots in the first half, when the Cavs opened a 17-point lead. He is Cleveland's best outside-shooting threat and the Cavs missed him last year in the final two games of the Eastern Conference semifinals against Boston after he separated his shoulder in Game 5. Gibson's shooting stroke looked as good as ever in the first half, and Cleveland pushed its lead to 19 in the third and appeared to be on its way to a rout. But the young Bobcats, who went 0-8 in the preseason, rallied and cut it to 62-57 on Richardson's layup late in the third. The Cavs, though, responded while James was resting on the bench. Coach Mike Brown pulled his superstar with 3:12 left in the third quarter and didn't put him back in until there was 7:27 remaining. While James was out, Cleveland outscored Charlotte 17-6 and opened a 79-63 lead. Following the Bobcats' winless exhibition season, Brown worried that his club wasn't prepared for the opener. "I'm not trying to make excuses, but I don't think we're quite ready right now,'' he said. The Hall of Famer was half right. Charlotte was overmatched at times, but made a game of it in the second half before fading and falling to 0-8 in Cleveland. The Bobcats did get their first look in more than a year at Adam Morrison, who missed last season with a knee injury. Morrison recently cut off his long hair and finished with seven points. Leading by nine after one, Brown, who wants to limit James to 38 minutes per game this season, kept the Olympic gold medalist on the bench for the first 6-plus minutes of the second quarter. James checked in with 5:45 left and the Cavaliers quickly ripped off eight straight to push their lead to 18. While James was on the bench, Cleveland rookie J.J. Hickson grabbed a loose ball in the lane and threw down a nasty, two-handed slam for his first points as a pro. James, usually on the receiving end of ovations, jumped out of his chair and screamed for Hickson, who didn't play in the Cavs' opener. Notes: The 68-year-old Brown hasn't lost any of his feistiness, picking up a technical in the third. ... Cavs C Ben Wallace had five blocks. ... James was thrilled with Wednesday night's rally and free concert for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama that he co-hosted with hip-hop star Jay-Z. "It was great,'' said James. "It wasn't just a concert for Jay-Z, it was a big-picture thing.'' James previously donated $20,000 to Obama's campaign. ... Crews for TV's ඄ Minutes'' have been trailing James for the past few days for an upcoming segment on Cleveland's star. ... At least for one night, the Cavs toned down their extravagant pregame ceremony, which used to include four fire-spewing swords on the scoreboard. During a visit to Cleveland during last year's playoffs, NBA commissioner David Stern lamented the use of pyrotechnics around the league. Made by NBA TV.

Carmelo Anthony blew by a defender in the first half, threw down a reverse jam and landed on his left foot. The usually ordinary play told Anthony everything he needed to know -- his sprained left ankle was just fine. "I figured if I could do that, I'm good," Anthony said. A healthy Anthony scored 25 points, Allen Iverson had 24 points and 13 assists, and the Denver Nuggets beat the Charlotte Bobcats 117-101 on Saturday night. "It didn't hurt at all," said Anthony, who missed five games after landing on the foot of Kobe Bryant on Jan. 21. "It felt good to be back." The Nuggets, who won their eighth straight game at home, were all too happy to have him back, especially Iverson. "When he is not in the lineup, it makes it tougher for me," Iverson said. "He is the main part of our team and he enables us to do so much with the attention that he gets." Linas Kleiza may be drawing more attention after the fourth-quarter performance he turned in against the Bobcats. Kleiza scored 16 of his 23 points in the period. "I started being more aggressive and it paid off," Kleiza said. "I don't think I lack confidence right now." The Bobcats may be lacking in that category after watching a potential win evaporate. They were seemingly in control of the game, leading 87-77 late in the third quarter, when the Nuggets surged ahead. Denver went on a 23-3 run -- including 15 straight points at one point -- to wrap up its second straight win. Charlotte has lost four of five, including three straight road games. "We knew they were going to make a run here at home, but we thought we were going to answer back," said Jason Richardson, who tied a season high with 38 points. The Bobcats were coming off a 127-96 loss the night before, and fatigue may have played a role. "Tough game in Golden State last night, late-night travel, high altitude, but we don't want to make excuses," said Sam Vincent, who reached his boiling point late in the game and was ejected after two technical fouls. "We came in, we played hard, we played well for probably 38 minutes and then we had some defensive lapses. We don't get some calls and things swing out of control for us." Richardson was unstoppable early, but then went cold in the final quarter. He scored just two points -- on two free throws -- over the last 12 minutes. That's due to the stifling defense that Yakhouba Diawara played on him. "They limited my touches," Richardson said. "Diawara made it tough for me to get to the hole. They just turned up the defense on me." Emeka Okafor added 20 points and 18 rebounds, and Raymond Felton, playing on a sprained left ankle, scored 14 points. The Nuggets were without Marcus Camby (left knee bruise) and Eduardo Najera (rib injury), leading to easy dunks and layups by the Bobcats all night long. Camby has been bothered by the knee the past few games and decided to give it a rest. Najera was injured taking a charge in the fourth quarter against Memphis on Wednesday. Anthony figured with the two sidelined, he needed to pick up the rebounding slack. He finished with 10 rebounds, giving him his 12th double-double of the season. "I've got to help out," he said. Steven Hunter made his first start of the season in place of Camby, and scored eight points in more than 27 minutes. "I don't think we win this game without Steven," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "He was a big presence in the middle." Karl was impressed with the Nuggets' ability to kick their defense up a notch in the second half, but he wishes they'd bear down earlier. After allowing the Bobcats to shoot 61 percent from the field in the first half, the Nuggets held them to 24 percent in the final half. "There are too many times where I walk into that locker room and we are letting a team shoot over 55 percent on us," Karl said. "Then, we change our face and personality and we look like the San Antonio Spurs on defense. I dont think that is the personality of a champion on defense. There has got to be a better foundation early in games and I think our guys know that." Game notes Bobcats guards Earl Boykins played 12:28 against his former team. Boykins was signed by Charlotte on Thursday to provide backcourt depth. ... Nuggets F Kenyon Martin and G Anthony Carter both finished with 10 points. ... Bobcats F Gerald Wallace didn't play after spraining his right ankle against Golden State. Vincent said he might be out a week.

Being a playoff bound team at the time, the Lakers had come off one of their hugest victories of the season downing the Mavericks by 5 off of 36 points from Kobe. But that didn't stop the next game against the expansion team to be easy. The famous game winner. Also the 1st game that started consecutive games of at least 30 points at Charlotte. Being a playoff bound team at the time, the Lakers had come off one of their hugest victories of the season downing the Mavericks by 5 off of 36 points from Kobe. But that didn't stop the next game against the expansion team to be easy. The Charlotte Bobcats who were one of the worse teams in the league never gave the Lakers a sigh of relief in the game as Emeka Okafor made history as the first Bobcat to reach 30 points. He also had 11 rebounds. Matt Carroll helped too as he exploded in the mid 4th quarter with 3 straight shots. Chucky Atkin's defense was also as bad as it was the whole season as Brevin Knight also made history as the first Bobcat to record over 15 assists. He also made bigger history as the player to record the most assists without a turnover. He had a 21/17 game while playing tough D on Kobe. Kobe had been frustrated by the Bobcat defense the whole night and was 4-14 entering the 8 minute mark of the 4th quarter although he was contributing in other ways with 8 assists. But, even during the middle of a mediocre season(by his standards), Kobe willed his team to a victory behind 8-10 shooting. The rampage started when the Lakers were down 100-90 with 7 minutes to go. But in just under two minutes, Kobe made 10 straight points to bring LA within 103-99. He made 6 straight jumpshots at one point including 3 threes. He topped the game off with a game winning shot from long range to help the Lakers avoid an embarrassment. Kobe finished the game off with 32 points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds on a respectable 12-24 from the field. When asked what spurred the scoring barrage Kobe responded, "One of those guys who was sitting courtside at the beginning of the fourth quarter said 'Kobe, 11 points, we're shutting you down.' I just looked at him and said 'Dude, I'm about to get going.' Brevin Knight helped me out, too. He got me going." When asked what Knight said to him when a technical foul occurred, Kobe responded, "I don't know. I can't hear him. He's too little."

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Kobe Bryant walked slowly into the locker room, sighed and stopped instead of continuing to his locker to meet reporters. Elias Says BryantKobe Bryant scored 58 points in the Lakers' loss. It was the 14th time in Kobe's career that he scored at least 50 points in a game, tying him with Rick Barry for fourth-most in NBA history, behind Wilt Chamberlain (118 such games), Michael Jordan (31) and Elgin Baylor (17). • For more Elias Says, click here "I don't want to have to walk all the way over there," Bryant said. Bryant was exhausted. His 58 points in 55 minutes were offset by two key errors in the third overtime, and the Charlotte Bobcats outlasted the Los Angeles Lakers 133-124 on Friday night. "I don't want to have to do that," Bryant said of his big scoring night. "It's too tiring." Bryant spoiled the third-highest point total of his career by committing a foul on Derek Anderson's 3-point attempt with 1:14 left. Anderson hit all three free throws to give Charlotte a 129-124 lead. Bryant then missed a long jumper and fouled out when Anderson drew a charge on the next possession. Bryant shot 22-of-45 and his performance trailed only his 81-point game last January in Toronto and a 62-point effort last December in Dallas. "I've been guarding him for 10 years," Anderson said. "I knew he was going to drive and do that." Bryant disagreed with both foul calls. "Silly calls," Bryant said. "I saw what (New Jersey Nets guard Jason) Kidd said and I don't want to be $20,000 lighter." Emeka Okafor had 22 points and a career-high 25 rebounds, Gerald Wallace scored 28 and Matt Carroll added a career-high 27 points for the Bobcats, who played their first triple-overtime game in franchise history. Raymond Felton added 22 points and 15 assists in 57 minutes for the Bobcats, who snapped a three-game losing streak. "I'm hurting, no question," Felton said. "But this was one of the best games in history. I'm glad I was a part of it." Rookie Adam Morrison was held to five points on 1-of-15 shooting, but the Bobcats were able to get another win against a good team. Five of Charlotte's eight victories have come against Utah, Detroit, Orlando, San Antonio, and the Lakers, who ended a six-game road trip 3-3 despite Bryant's third 50-point game of the season. The trouble was nobody else scored more than 14 points or took more than 10 shots for the Lakers, and Bryant appeared to tire down the stretch. "I was yelling at them to run their offense and get away from that. They just seemed to be going back to him all the time," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. Bryant curiously passed on throwing up a prayer at the end of the second overtime and Sasha Vujacic couldn't get a shot off at the buzzer, creating the NBA's second triple-overtime game in three nights. New York beat Detroit 151-145 on Wednesday night. Bryant missed two jumpers at the end of regulation, including a 20-footer at the buzzer, and Felton missed two shots in the final five seconds of the first overtime for Charlotte. Wallace fouled out late in the first overtime when he picked up two fouls in 15 seconds trying to guard Bryant. Little-used Bernard Robinson replaced him, and scored four points in the third OT. "We wanted him to go in for defense, and he ended up giving us a little bit of offense," coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. Bryant's 3-pointer with 2:34 left in regulation snapped a tie and his fadeaway with 1:47 left made it 101-98. But Carroll's floater and a putback kept the Bobcats in it, and Wallace's three-point play with 43 seconds left tied it. Bryant scored 27 points in the first half, but picked up his fourth foul -- and a technical foul for arguing -- with seven minutes left in the third quarter. He sat out the final five minutes of the period and the Bobcats took a five-point lead on Carroll's 3. Bryant didn't take long to wow the crowd of 19,561, the largest in the arena's two-year history. He hit six of his first seven shots, including a spectacular one-handed dunk off an alley-oop pass, to give the Lakers a 22-12 lead. The Lakers led by as many as 14 in the first quarter. "The fans got to see Kobe Bryant at his best, but for us to be able to come out on top tonight was great," Wallace said Game notes Bobcats G Brevin Knight underwent successful surgery to repair a torn abdominal muscle Friday in Philadelphia. Bickerstaff said Knight will be able to begin rehabilitation in about a week, and hopes to return in a month. ... Bickerstaff said he's not sure if they'll bring in another point guard, which would require them to release a player. ... Jackson acknowledged it's been tough being on the road for 12 days after recently undergoing hip replacement surgery. "It was a challenge," said Jackson, who still noticeably limps.

All credits goes to JD2K Kobe Bryant injured his right knee in the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers' 102-98 win over the Charlotte Bobcats on Tuesday night and did not return to the preseason game. Jordan Farmar came off the bench and scored 15 of his 17 points in the final quarter as Los Angeles (3-2) kept Charlotte (0-7) winless. The extent of Bryant's injury is not known. The Lakers said that last season's NBA Most Valuable Player will be re-examined on Wednesday. Bryant was injured with 3:08 left in the second quarter under the Lakers' basket when he jumped for a rebound. Bryant motioned to the bench to come out and coach Phil Jackson called a 20-second timeout as Bryant limped off the floor. Bryant scored four points in 14 minutes and came out in street clothes for the third quarter. Andrew Bynum scored 16 points, Trevor Ariza added 14. Pau Gasol and Derek Fisher scored 12 points apiece for the Lakers in limited playing time.

Even without three of their top players, the injury-riddled Toronto Raptors had no problem handling the Charlotte Bobcats on Monday. Kris Humphries and Carlos Delfino scored 17 points apiece to top Toronto in a 98-79 win over Charlotte, sending the slumping Bobcats to their sixth straight loss. The Raptors were missing starters Chris Bosh (groin), T.J. Ford (arm) and Andrea Bargnani (knee). But the Raptors' depth proved their saviour once again, with six players scoring in double figures. Joey Graham had 13 points in his first start of the season. Jose Calderon had 12 points and nine assists, Anthony Parker added 11 points and Jason Kapono finished with 10. Rookie Jamario Moon added 12 rebounds for Toronto (10-8). Gerald Wallace scored 19 points to lead the Bobcats (6-10). The Raptors never trailed Monday, and were up by as many as 21 points before heading into the fourth quarter with a 76-59 advantage. The Bobcats scored the first four points of the fourth to cut Toronto's lead to 13 points. But the game was never in doubt, and the Raptors were up by 20 points with 5:11 left when Humphries finished a series of nifty passes with a dunk that brought the crowd of 17,439 to its feet. A driving layup by Humphries with just under a minute left gave Toronto a 22-point lead en route to the team's fourth consecutive win at the Air Canada Centre. The Raptors shot 51 per cent on the night and held the Bobcats to 33 per cent shooting. They also outrebounded the visitors 46-35. But while the Raptors had a relatively easy time with the struggling Bobcats, they could use their injured threesome back Wednesday when they host Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns. Bosh, the team's leading scorer and rebounder, missed his third consecutive game with a strained right groin. Ford, the starting point guard, missed his fifth game with a ``stinger'' in his arm, a nerve irritation that radiates down the arms. Calderon has played superbly in Ford's absence and Monday was no different. On one frenzied sequence in the second quarter, the hard-working guard fell down but kept his dribble going, only to have his layup ring around the basket then fall out. But he raced downcourt, stole the ball off Okafor then finished with a driving layup. Bargnani sat out with a hyper-extended left knee, suffered in Saturday's 101-97 loss to the Washington Wizards. All three injured players are listed as day-to-day. The Raptors came out strong, shooting a sizzling 55 per cent in the first quarter and taking a 22-8-point advantage on a layup by Calderon late in the frame. They led 27-16 heading into the second quarter. The Raptors opened the second on a 13-5 run, a three-pointer by Darrick putting the home team up 40-21. Toronto held the Bobcats to 28 per cent shooting in the first half and led 54-33 at the break. The Bobcats opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run to creep back to within 12 points, but they could get no closer. The Raptors stretched their lead to 69-49 on a three by Delfino, and were up 76-59 heading into the final quarter. NOTES: Following Wednesday's game against the Suns, the Raptors head to Boston to face the Celtics on Friday...The Raptors won a team-record 30 games at home last season, but never more than three in a row.

Los Angeles Lakers 88 Charlotte Bobcats 77 Pau Gasol scored 13 points and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Charlotte Bobcats 88-77 on Thursday night without the ailing Kobe Bryant. Bryant, the NBA's reigning MVP, missed the exhibition game because of residual swelling in his hyper-extended right knee following a collision with teammate Josh Powell on Tuesday night against the Bobcats in San Diego. The crowd of 12,147 at Honda Center let out a collective groan when public address announcer Lawrence Tanter gave them the news following the player introductions. "I've got a little bit of puffiness in the back of the knee. It's just from the trauma of landing the way I landed,'' Bryant said. "So we'll just knock that out and make sure the swelling's out of there, which should be soon. Then I'm OK. After seeing the injury on TV, I'm surprised it's not worse, to be honest.'' Adam Morrison scored 13 points for the Bobcats, who finished the preseason 0-7. The fifth-year team will open the regular season Oct. 30 at Cleveland under Larry Brown, who is coaching his ninth NBA team following the firing of Sam Vincent in April. Morrison played 18 minutes and was 4-for-8 from the field - a year and three days after he tore a ligament in his left knee while attempted to defend the Lakers' Luke Walton on a drive to the basket in an exhibition game at Staples Center. The injury kept the third overall pick in the June 2006 draft sidelined for the entire season. Morrison played in six preseason games, averaging 16.5 minutes and 8.3 points. The Bobcats took their only lead, 43-42, on a fast-break dunk by Emeka Okafor. The Lakers responded with a 15-0 run capped by Andrew Bynum's two free throws with 2:36 left in the period, and Jordan Farmar beat the third-quarter buzzer with a 3-pointer that gave Los Angeles a 66-55 advantage. The Lakers extended the lead to 73-56 on Farmar's layup with 9:23 to play, and the Bobcats got no closer than the final margin. Despite Jason Richardson's 1-for-8 shooting in the first half and Charlotte's 27.0 field goal percentage, the Lakers led only 36-30 at intermission. The Bobcats, who have shot under 44 percent in every game during the preseason, finished at 32.9 percent. Last season, they shot 45.2 percent as a team and finished 32-50. Powell also sat out for the Lakers because of a strained left hamstring. Teammate Sasha Vujacic, who has been sidelined throughout training camp because of an avulsion fracture in his left ankle, was examined by a foot specialist Thursday and said he hoped to get some minutes in the preseason finale. "It feels better,'' said Vujacic, who signed a three-year, $15 million contract on July 28. "There's no sharp pain, but it's still a little bit irritated. I just have to face it and play with it. Tomorrow I'm going to do the full practice and then we go from there. I'm going to be there and I'm going to be in uniform, which I'm excited about. But if the coach doesn't play me, that's not my decision. We'll see.'' Los Angeles Lakers 88 The Lakers will conclude their preseason schedule against Oklahoma City on Friday night in Ontario, Calif., then open the season Tuesday night at home against Portland.
